Hello.

We were traveling through here three days ago and spotted a tiny Pomeranian dog running scared on I-84.

We tried to catch him, but failed before he ran into the wilderness near here. Please keep an eye out for the little one.

City & State.

It was all we could do now. I’ll pray for the little thing, but I will try to forget.

The trip home was long and we were tired when we arrived. Again, I went to bed thinking of nothing but the little lost dog. I wish it weren’t so far to travel back there. The next morning was another beautiful day and as we were walking little Rose and Ivy, we were thankful that it wasn’t one of them lost. “I would probably still be up there. I wouldn’t have been able to leave,” I said.

I was still deeply troubled for the next few days and thought only about the little dog, especially at night. I thought of him being alone in the dark mountains. What could he eat to stay alive, and could he find water. Would he hide himself from large wild animals?

Several days after arriving home, Hazel and I were unloading groceries from her car when I glanced across the parking lot and saw JT standing there talking on his cell phone. He was pointing at me moving his index finger in the “come here” sign. As I walked over to him, he was seriously listening to the caller but at the same time whispering to me “The Little Dog.” My mouth dropped open and I felt a sudden rush in my chest.

The man on the phone named Bret said he and his wife, Janet, live in the wooded area by the mailboxes near the rest stop. He said he had turned into his driveway and saw the tiny Pomeranian dog in his yard standing next to his other large dogs. He told us that he picked up the little one and took it into the house and gave it food and water. He had found my note in the mailbox.

“The little guy was pretty beat up,” he said. My wife gave him a bath as he smelled heavily of cigarette smoke, then he went to sleep for a long time.

Bret explained that he is a building inspector and works in Pendleton Oregon. Over the years he has rescued several dogs that were taken to the summit and dropped off. None of the dogs had collars or chips. He didn’t feel that he could keep this one, as he was too small to keep track of up there. Bret and his wife noticed the dog seemed to have difficulty breathing. He offered to take him to Pendleton to their vet and have him checked out and would call us back the next day and let us know the veterinarians findings.

“If you folks would like this little guy, I could make arrangements to get him to you.” Relief, Joy and excitement came over me.
